Tout petit monde / Very little World

Ce voyage, voilà presqu'un an qu'on s'y prépare. Et comme on est des gens prévoyants, les grands traits sont déjà réglés depuis longtemps. Tant est si bien que, quand on me demande où nous en sommes de nos préparations, je réponds... ben... rien de plus que quand on m'a demandé la semaine précédente ! Notre échéancier ne prévoit pas grand chose avant la rentrée ou l'année prochaine, et ce depuis déjà 3-4 mois !

Ça n'empêche qu'il y a mille détails qu'il va falloir faire entrer dans cet échéancier. Des trucs bêtes mais essentiels quand on s'en va 6 mois sur l'autre versant de l'Atlantique. A qui va-t-on laisser les clefs de notre appart ? Qui va récupérer et renvoyer notre courrier ? Arroser les plantes ? Ne pas oublier d'acheter des valises et comment gérer leur poids. Et puis quoi mettre dedans ? Beaucoup de jouets ? Des ustensiles de cuisine ? Beaucoup de vêtements ? Ne pas oublier non plus de réduire l'abonnement EDF, couper Internet. J'en passe, pour votre confort de lecture.

Et puis, même s'il s'agit du plus grand voyage de notre vie, je trouve ça presque adorable d'imaginer qu'il commencera par un matin comme un autre, avec nos valises, dans notre bon vieux tramway nantais, mélangé aux travailleurs du jour et comme si nous allions juste passer 1 semaine à Paris (volume des valises exclu...).

Le point de départ de chaque chose, de la plus banale au plus incroyable voyage est souvent identique. Ça fait méditer non ?

Very little world

We are planning this trip for almost a year now. As farsighted persons, the main things are already settled. Meaning that when I’m asked where we are in our preparations, I answer… em… nothing more than when I had been aked the week before! There is nothing in our schedule that we can do before september or next year, and so it will be for 3 or 4 months!

Nevertheless, there is a thousand details we’ll have to add in this schedule. Minus things, but the most important is that we are going for 6 months on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Who is going to keep the keys of our appartment ? Who is going to pick up and forward us the mail, and water the plants ? We have to buy suitcases and know how to deal with the weight. And then we’ll have to choose what to put in it ? Lots of toys ? Cooking ustensils ? Lots ofnclothes ? We don’t have to forget to lower the electicity bill, terminate the intenet connexion. And so on, otherwise it would be to long to read.

And even if it is the biggest trip of our life, I find it almost adorable to imagine it would begin one morning as usual, with our suitecases, in our old good tramway of Nantes, mixed with workers just as we were on our way to spend a week in Paris (except from the volume of our luggage...)

The most usual to the most incredible trip is often the same have often the same begining. It makes your think about it, don’t you ?

New York avec choix / New York with choices

Je vois très bien ce que la plupart d'entre vous a pensé en lisant nos premiers posts : "Mais quelle chance fantastique", "qu'est-ce que j'aimerais être à leur place", "ce sont mes Dieux", ou bien : "Mais pourquoi Google m'a amené ici, je cherchais l'adresse d'un bon italien !!!"...

Pourtant, sachez-le, préparer un tel périple est parfois difficile.
Choix cornéliens, budget serré, dilemmes cauchemardesques... C'est simple, si je prend le seul exemple du mois que nous allons passer à New York, je ne dors plus la nuit tellement les décisions à prendre sont pénibles (à moins que ça soit les heures tardives des matchs de la Coupe du Monde...).

Le plus gros dilemme que nous ayons à ce sujet concerne le lieu de notre villégiature : doit-on privilégier un appartement en plein Manhattan pour éviter les grands trajets quotidiens en métro mais en bouffant assurément notre budget ou bien devons-nous vivre dans une location plus cheap à Brooklyn quitte à passer de longues heures dans le Subway, bondé, sale et bruyant ?
Ah ! Vous voyez ! Je vois déjà vos visages ébahis d'admiration se fermer devant un tel déchirement.

Avant cela, nous avons du régler le problème du "quand positionner ce mois new-yorkais" dans notre demi année de voyage. Il convient de dire que Big Apple est plus appréciable à l'automne, quand les touristes se font aussi rares que les feuilles rouges de Central Park se font nombreuses. Oui mais voilà, y aller en cette période, c'est-à-dire en plein milieu de notre voyage, nous imposait de dépenser un double loyer. En commençant par NY, nous économisions donc 1 précieux mois à Montréal (oui, on aurait aussi pu le mettre à la fin mais, désolé, New York sous la neige on a déjà donné !).

Cette décision prise, on se préparait alors à vivre des journées étouffantes sous les 30° minimum que fait subir la mégapole. Pas facile avec nos 3 petits piou piou si fragiles...

Mais revenons sur les loyers prohibitifs de cette ville. En admettant, qu'après d'âpres concertations avec nous-même, nous décidions de poser nos sacs à dos a Brooklyn, les loyers y restent terrifiants. Pauvres néo-nantais que nous sommes, payant une bouchée de pain notre luxueux duplex, nous avons perdu l'habitude d'avoir des escrocs comme propriétaires. Et les prix indécents que même la banlieue de la pomme affiche va nous obliger à vivre dans un 2 pièces... au max !
Et oui, plus un choix, une o-bli-ga-tion !

Dur... Et si par malheur les gens qui nous ont promis de venir, tiennent leur satané promesse, nous n'aurions plus rien à envier au mode de vie des punaises qui envahissent la ville... Bref.

Rien qu'avec cet exemple new yorkais, j'espère vous avoir ouvert les yeux sur la difficulté qui peut se cacher derrière un voyage en apparence idyllique.

Et encore, je n'ai pas parlé des problèmes de digestion que nous allons endurer à tester les meilleurs burgers de la ville, des risques de vertige en haut de leurs buildings démesurés, du manque cruel de baguette et de bon vin, etc... J'espère qu'on s'en sortira.

 P.S : Concernant le choix Manahttan/Brooklyn, si vous avez soit des bon plans soit des conseils, soit des avis, on est preneur. C'est, pour le coup, un vrai dilemme !

                             

I can clearly see what most of you thought when you red our first posts : “What a fantastic opportunity”, “I really would like to be in there shoes”, “They are my gods”, or “Why Google led me here, I just wanted the address of a good Italian restaurant!”

However, you have to know it, planning such a trip is difficult sometimes.

Cornelian choices, short budget, nightmare dilemmas… It’s simple, if I take for instance the month we are going to live in New York, I can’t sleep at night so the decision to take are hard (unless it’s because of the late Soccer Wold Cup matches…)

The biggest dilemma we have is regarding where we are going to live.

Do we have to give advantage to an appartment in the very center of Manhattan to avoid long everyday subway journeys, but eating up our budget, or do we have to live in a cheaper renting in Brooklyn at the risk of spending long hours in the crowded, dirty and noisy subway?

See? I can see your admiring looks closing in the face of such a tearing.

Before that, we had to solve the problem of “when to plan that month in New York” in our half-year trip. It must be said that the Big Apple is more appreciable in autumn, when tourists are as rare as red leaves are numerous in Central Park. Indeed, but to go there at that time, that is to say in the middle of our trip, imposed to pay 2 rents at a time. Beginning with New York, we saved a precious month in Montreal (yes we also could do it at the end, sorry but NYC under the snow has already been done!)

Once the decision has been taken, we would prepare to spend stuffy days under the minimum 30°C you may suffer from in the big city. Not that easy with our so fragile 3 peewees...

But let’s get back to the city prohibitive rents. Admitting, after rough consultation with ourselves, we chose to unpack our rucksack in Brooklyn, rents remain terrifying there. Poor people freshly settled in Nantes that we are, paying our rent a trifle for our luxurious duplex, we do not have the habit to have a crook as landlord anymore. Given the indecent prices that you can see even in the suburb of the Apple, we have no other choice than to live in an apppartment having 1 bedroom… Maximum!

Yes this is not a choice, this is a ne-ce-ssi-ty!

Tough… And if, by any chance, people who promised to come, keep their promise, we would have nothing to envy the city invading bedbug’s way of life... Anyway.

I hope this example of New York was an eye-opener and that you can see now how hard it is even though the trip sounds idyllic.

And I didn’t mentionned the problems of poor digestion we’re going to face testing the best burgers in the city, the fear of heights on the top of one of its highest building, the lack of baguette and good wine… I hope we’ll make it !

PS : Regarding the choice Manahttan/Brooklyn, if you have either good tips or advice, we are more than interrested. Because this is a real dilemma!

Notre "chez-nous" pour quelques mois / Our home for some months

Tout commence maintenant... / Everything is begining now...

... ou bien cela a t'il commencé il y a plus longtemps ?

En août dernier pour être précis. Nous avons pris cette décision sur un coup de tête dans notre lit (comme souvent chez nous : déménager, faire un enfant, acheter une voiture ou faire une soirée tarot : des spontanés j'vous dis !).

Nous l'avons, par la suite, réfléchie, peaufinée, étudiée... Mais l'idée était là, une envie de voyager, de découvrir, un projet à 5, un truc un peu fou.

C'est comme ça que nous avons commencé à en parler à notre famille, nos amis : nous allions partir vivre quelques mois au Canada dans les deux ans à venir.

Nous avons réfléchi où, combien de temps, dans quelles conditions, avec quel argent et quand ?

On a de suite pensé au Québec pour plein de raisons (la langue, les paysages, les gens, nos amis sur place, la proximité des US, la poutine... ); nous étions parti sur une année mais les conditions pour travailler étant ce qu'elles sont là-bas (visa à demander par l'employeur + nos professions pas vraiment recherchées) et la possibilité de visiter limitée quand tu passes 42 heures par semaine au travail, nous nous sommes très vite rangé à l'idée d'y venir en touristes et d'y rester le temps accordé aux visiteurs soit 6 mois. 

Ensuite comment financer ça ? Je vous passe les détails, les calculs, les fonds de tiroirs, les budgets cent fois remis à jour, les vols à mains armées échafaudés... C'est pas simple mais ça devrait le faire ! 

Enfin, quand ? On a fait un beau tableau excel avec "avantages" et "inconvénients" pour un départ soit en  juin 2014, janvier 2015, juin 2015 ou janvier 2016... les pours, les contres, surtout en terme d'emploi ici, de scolarité pour les enfants et de bouclage de budget. 

C'est juin 2015 qui l'a emporté ! Yeah ! Le projet prenait forme... une belle forme pleine de promesses ! 

Dans nos têtes pleines de rêves nous voulions voir le reste de l'est du Canada, la côte est des US, faire découvrir New-York aux enfants, et idéalement l'ouest du Canada aussi ( et le Grand Nord me rajoute Zaza) !

Il faut savoir choisir, même si c'est dur... 

Pour des questions logistiques nous commencerons donc par nous poser 4  semaines à New-York ; nous avons budgeté aussi un voyage à Quebec et vers l'embouchure du Saint Laurent, et un vers Ottawa et Toronto. Pour le reste, ça sera en fonction de sous qu'il nous reste ! 

Le reste du temps nous vivrons comme des montréalais ! 

Les enfants auront l'école à la maison (via les cours du CNED et une déclaration au Consulat, mais nous y reviendrons prochainement...)  : Milan rentrera en CP, Fantine en CM2 et Paul en 2nde ! Accroches-toi !!!

Pourquoi ne pas faire plusieurs pays, plusieurs villes me direz-vous ? 

Et bien d'abord je pense que pour découvrir vraiment un pays, une ville, ses habitants, sa façon de vivre il faut résider sur place au quotidien. Ca sous entendait qu'on se limitait en terme de destinations. 

Ensuite parce que pour faire les cours aux enfants, il faut une certaine stabilité, un certaine routine même si évidement l'énorme avantage de faire l'école à la maison c'est de pouvoir adapter l'emploi du temps aux envies et au temps qu'il fait dehors ! Mais bouger sans cesse peut perturber l'apprentissage, à mon avis... mais j'explorerais peut-être d'autres façons de faire avec l'expérience hein ! 

Qui sait, peut-être dans 5  ans irons-nous en Asie et je ferais l'école aux deux petits sur un tapis de feuille de bananier un jour et sur un ferry dans le delta du Mékong le jour suivant, mais pour l'heure nous commençons par une formule plus... occidentale, il faut l'avouer.

Enfin il y a aussi la question du budget : plus on multiplie les déplacements plus ça revient cher en terme de transport mais aussi de logement (on a négocie une remise sur l'appartement de Montréal en raison de la durée de location etc...).

Notre décision de vivre donc 5 mois sur Montréal étant prise, nous voulions avant tout trouver notre nid. Les locations meublées sont nombreuses mais pour en trouver une qui nous convient et qui soit libre 5 mois d'affilé on a décidé de s'y prendre tôt ! Et puis on ne se refait pas, on aime l'aventure mais on aime aussi prévoir.... C'est comme ça qu'on a découvert Benoit qui loue un appart de 2 chambres et demi, avec une grande cuisine, un petit salon et un bout de jardin dans un quartier sympa de Montréal. Nos amis, Audrey et David (merci les choux), résidents permanents au Canada, sont allés visiter le bien, nous ont envoyé la vidéo et le lendemain on signait le contrat ! On a hâte d'y poser nos valises !

                                

Voilà où nous en sommes, il y a encore beaucoup de choses à faire, à penser et à vous raconter...

Everything is begining now...

… or did it begin a longer time ago?

Last August to be precise. We took this decision on an impulse in our bed (this is usually how we take decisions : to move out, to conceive a baby, to buy a car or to plan a cards-playing night : we are spontaneous!)

Then we thought out it, we refined it, we reviewed it… but the idea was here, a desire to travel, to discover, a projet for the 5 of us, something a bit crazy.

This is how we started to talk about it to our family, our friends: in 2 years from that time, we were about to go and live for some months in Canada.

We thought about where, how long, in what conditions, with what money and when.

For many reasons Quebec came up first in our minds (the language, landscapes, people, our friends there, close to the USA, the poutine…) ; at first we wanted to leave one year but conditions to work are quite difficult over there (the employer has to ask for a visa and our jobs are not really seeked) and when you work 42 hours a week, you don’t have a lot of time to visit the country. So we decided to come as tourists and stay 6 months the maximum for a tourist to stay there.

And then, how to pay for it? To make the story short, we made calculations, we scraped some money together, we made budgets and updated them a hundred times, we thought about armed robbery… It’s not simple but we would make it !

Well, when? We did a beautiful excel table with “pros” and “cons” to leave either in June 2014, January 2015, June 2015 or January 2016… Pros and cons, especially regarding work here, school for the kids and budget.

And June 2015 won! Yeah! The projet was taking shape… a nice shape full of promises!

In our full-of-dreams-heads we wanted to see the rest and the east of Canada, the US east coast, to show New York to the kids, and ideally the West of Canada too (and also the Far North just added Zaza)!

We have to choose, even if it’s difficult… 

For logistical reasons, we will begin to stay 4 weeks in New York ; we also have budgeted for a trip to Quebec city and to the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, and a trip to Ottawa and Toronto. For the rest it will depend on the ammount of money we’ll have!

The rest of the time, we’ll live like real Montrealers!

We’ll homeschool the kids (thanks to the CNED and a declaration to the French Consulate, but we’ll come back to this later…): Milan will start 1st grade, Fantine 5th grade, and Paul 10th grade, hold on tight!!!

Why do not visit several countries, or several cities, you will ask?

First, I think that to really discover a country, a city, its inhabitants, its way of life you have to live there every day. So it implied to limit the destinations.

Then, when you homeschool your kids, they need some stability, some habits, even if the advantage of homeschooling is to adapt their timetable to suit your desire or the vagaries of the weather! But if you move all the time, it could affect the kid’s learning, in my opinion… but, with experience, I will explore other ways to teach, huh ?

Who knows, maybe in 5 years, we’ll go to Asia and I’ll homeschool to the youngest 2 kids on a banana leaves carpet one day and on a ferry boat in the Mekong Delta the next day, but for now we’ll start with a method more… occidental, I have to admit.

At last, there is the budget issue: the more trips we do, the more expensive it will be regarding transportation and accomodation (we have negociated a discount on the appartment in Montreal because of the duration of the lease, etc).

Our decision to live 5 months in Montreal was taken, above all we wanted to find our nest. There are a lot of rented furnished appartments but to find one which suits us and which is free 5 months in a row we decided to start early! And people cannot change their nature, we like adventure but we like to anticipate… This is how we found Benoit who rent a 2 and a half bedroom appartment, with a big kitchen, a small living room and a piece of garden in a very nice neighborhood in Montreal. Our friends, Audrey and David (thank my dears), permanent residents in Canada, went to visit it, sent us a video, and the next day we signed the contrat! We look forward to settle down!

Here we are, there is still a lot to do, to think about, to tell…
